Custom software

Are we better building some custom software for you?

Until recently, the right answer was probably, NO! Now, our use of agentic engineering means that custom software can be built and maintained for a fraction of the cost of a few years ago.

What could we build for you?

Web and mobile apps

Apps for your customers or your people, from a first working version to something you can grow, on the web, iPhone and Android.

Internal tools

The spreadsheet everyone depends on, or the process that runs on email and memory, turned into a tool your team can rely on.

AI tools

Assistants that answer from your own documents and data, set up so you can see what they do and change the rules.

Games and gamification

Learning games, marketing games, and points, challenges and rewards that make everyday tasks more engaging. It’s where our team started, as 3RD SENSE.

If you’ve got your own idea, let’s have a chat about what it will take to bring it to life.

When is an off-the-shelf product the better answer?

If an existing software product does all that you need, then it is probably not worth building your own. Many SaaS products also support plugins, so a custom plugin might be a better option, and we can help with that.

Custom software is worth it when:

  • The way you do something is part of what sets you apart, and a generic product would make you average at it.
  • Your needs are specific enough that no product fits without awkward compromise.
  • The data is too sensitive to hand to a third party, and control matters more than convenience.
  • You’ll use it enough, for long enough, to justify owning and maintaining it.

Our process

Get it built in 5 easy steps

Each step stands on its own, so you can stop, change course or keep going.

  1. Collaborative design

We work through it together: what the software needs to do, a high-level design, and a business case for the project. At the end, you get an estimate and a recommended monthly budget for the build.

  2. Prototype

We build a working prototype with agentic engineering, so you see working software sooner and can try out the ideas before anything is final.

  3. Minimum viable product

We release the first version your users can use for real, with the features that matter most.

  4. User-driven ongoing improvement cycle

We keep improving it in short cycles, on a monthly budget, based on what your users tell us, and you can change course as you go.

  5. Maintenance and support

If you’d like us to, we look after it once it’s live, with updates, fixes and support, month by month.

We use agentic design and engineering, we follow an agile methodology, we build in security, functional and user testing and we provide ongoing monitoring and support, with regular AI-driven optimisations.

What else would you like to know?

Why is custom software more within reach now?

Agentic engineering has made custom software projects viable that never used to be. When we develop software, we’re seeing development time cut by up to 80%, though every project is different.

What is agentic engineering?

Experienced engineers directing AI agents that write and test much of the code. The engineers decide how the software must handle security, data and the awkward cases, and they check what the agents produce. AI does a lot of the work, and it’s never in sole charge.

How long does it take to build?

It depends on what the software needs to do, and you’ll have an estimate for yours at the end of the design stage.

How much does it cost?

We always like to start with something manageable, and because we use AI in everything we do, you’ll probably find we cost a lot less than you might expect. Let’s have a brief meeting about your specific requirements, and then we can let you know the costs.

Who owns the code?

You do.

If you’d like us to, we look after it and keep improving it, month by month.

Will it work with the systems we already use?

In most cases, yes. Which of your systems it connects to, and how, is part of the high-level design, worked out before anything is built.
